Spearfishing Cape Verde | Bluewater Spearfishing Trips

Bluewater spearfishing in Cape Verde for wahoo

Kaluna Freediving organises guided spearfishing trips in Cape Verde for capable freedivers who want a properly planned Atlantic spearfishing trip, not a random boat day.

Cape Verde is one of the most interesting spearfishing destinations within easy reach of Europe. Warm Atlantic water, volcanic islands, offshore structure, deep drop-offs and a serious pelagic fishery make it a strong location for both bluewater spearfishing and reef hunting.

Our Cape Verde trips are organised with a full-service setup: guided spearfishing days, local boat and captain, simple apartment accommodation for the group, airport transfers, harbour transfers and fish vacuum packing service. You get the local access and the Swiss organisation around it.

Communication is available in English and German.

Why Cape Verde for Spearfishing?

Cape Verde sits in the tropical Atlantic, west of Africa, where volcanic islands rise out of deep ocean. That geography is the reason the spearfishing is so interesting: shallow reef, steep drop-offs, offshore banks, current, bait and big predators all come together in a compact island system.

For spearfishing, Cape Verde is especially known for reliable wahoo potential, tuna in offshore areas, seasonal sailfish and mahi-mahi, a serious blue marlin reputation and strong reef species such as amberjack, almaco jack, African pompano and cubera snapper.

The attraction is not only the list of species. It is the mix. On the right trip, you can spend time on reef and structure, then move into proper bluewater when the weather, group level and target species make sense.

This is exactly why Cape Verde works well for different types of groups: advanced spearfishers can focus on bluewater, while capable freedivers with limited spearfishing experience can start with a more progressive reef-based format.

Bluewater Spearfishing in Cape Verde

Bluewater spearfishing in Cape Verde is the main reason many divers look at the islands. The water can be clear, the structure is serious and the amount of pelagic is unreal

The main bluewater targets include wahoo, yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, mahi-mahi, sailfish and, in the right season and format, marlin. People searching for spearfishing tuna or spearfishing marlin in Cape Verde are usually looking for the same thing: a destination where the encounter is realistic enough to justify the trip.

The honest answer is this: wahoo and tuna are the more realistic bluewater targets. Marlin is possible, but it is a specialist objective. It requires the right season, the right weather, the right equipment, the right captain and the right diver. We can organise marlin-focused opportunities, but this is not a standard mixed-level group format and it is not something to treat casually.

Our local captain has strong Cape Verde experience and knows how to create the conditions for a real marlin chance when the season and weather line up. For serious bluewater spearfishers, that option can be discussed separately.

Reef Spearfishing in Cape Verde

Reef spearfishing in Cape Verde should not be treated as the “easy option” or a backup plan. It is often the most useful way to build a trip correctly, especially for mixed groups, spearfishing beginners or intermediate freedivers who already have the water skills but not yet the full hunting experience.

The reef and drop-off areas can offer amberjack, almaco jack, African pompano, grouper, snapper and cubera snapper. Some fish are found in shallower reef areas. Others require stronger diving, better technique and more selective hunting.

For tailor-made beginner and intermediate spearfishing trips, reef work is usually the correct starting point. It lets divers get used to local conditions, boat rhythm, buddy procedure, fish behaviour and shot discipline before moving into more advanced bluewater scenarios.

For experienced divers, the reef can also be a serious trophy environment. Big jacks and cubera snapper are not beginner fish. They require patience, depth comfort, clean technique and good judgement.

Trip Formats

We do not force every group into the same format. The correct Cape Verde spearfishing trip depends on the season, weather, group size and experience level.

Beginner / Intermediate Spearfishing Groups

For capable freedivers who are new to spearfishing or still building experience, we can organise progressive trips with a reef and structure focus. These trips are about learning the hunting process properly: safety, buddy system, approach, fish identification, selective shots, equipment handling and fish care.

Bluewater can be added when the conditions and group level make sense, but it is not forced for ego or marketing.

Bluewater Spearfishing Trips

For experienced spearfishers, the trip can be built around bluewater hunting for wahoo, tuna, mahi-mahi and other pelagic species. This format requires better open-water comfort, stronger equipment and disciplined group behaviour.

Marlin-Focused Spearfishing Trips

Marlin-focused trips are a separate specialist option for experienced bluewater spearfishers. The captain, route, season, equipment and expectations must all be aligned. This costs more, requires more preparation and is not suitable for average holiday spearfishing.

Who This Trip Is For

The most important requirement is that you are a capable freediver. You do not always need to be an experienced spearfisher, but you must be comfortable in the water, able to follow safety procedures and honest about your level.

This trip can work for:

  • Experienced freedivers who want to start spearfishing in a structured way.
  • Intermediate spearfishers looking for a serious Atlantic destination.
  • Advanced bluewater hunters targeting wahoo, tuna or marlin opportunities.
  • Private groups who want a full-service spearfishing trip with accommodation and transfers included.
  • Divers who prefer clear English or German communication before and during the trip planning.

This trip is not for people who want to shoot everything they see, ignore the buddy system or treat the ocean like a theme park. Cape Verde is a serious location. It rewards good preparation!

What Is Included

Every Kaluna Freediving Cape Verde trip is built as a full-service setup. The diving format can change depending on dates, weather, group size and experience level, but the core logistics are part of the Kaluna concept:

  • Guided spearfishing days in Cape Verde
  • Local boat, captain and ocean support
  • Simple apartment / Airbnb-style accommodation for the group
  • Airport transfer
  • Transfers between accommodation and harbour
  • Fish handling and vacuum packing service

The goal is simple: you arrive, the logistics are handled and you can focus on diving, hunting, recovery and the next day on the water.

Flights are normally booked by the guests. We recommend contacting us before booking flights so the arrival and departure plan matches the trip schedule.

Accommodation and Logistics

Boa Vista – Our Main Base in Cape Verde

Most Kaluna Cape Verde spearfishing trips are based around Boa Vista. The island gives practical access to accommodation, harbour logistics and productive fishing grounds, while still keeping the trip simple enough for small private groups.

From Boa Vista, the daily plan depends on weather, wind, swell, current, group level and target species. Some days are better for reef and structure. Other days allow a stronger bluewater focus. The point is not to force a fixed route, but to use the best conditions available during the trip.

The standard accommodation setup is simple and practical: an apartment or Airbnb-style place for the group. This is not designed as a luxury resort holiday. It is designed as a functional spearfishing base where the group can stay together, prepare equipment, eat, rest and keep the trip efficient.

Airport, accommodation and harbour transfers are part of the Kaluna setup. This is especially useful in Cape Verde, where losing time on local logistics can cost you the best weather window of the trip.

Fish Service and Vacuum Packing

Fish handling and vacuum packing service is included in the Kaluna setup. After successful hunting days, your catch can be prepared and vacuum packed, making it easier to store, share and transport.

We promote selective spearfishing. The goal is not to fill the boat with dead fish. The goal is to hunt well, respect bag limits and make full use of what is taken.

Best Season for Spearfishing in Cape Verde

The general Cape Verde spearfishing season runs roughly from April to December. Water temperatures are typically warm, around 22–27 °C, depending on the month and conditions.

Target / Priority General Timing
Blue marlin focus April to early July
Wahoo and tuna potential Possible year-round
Sailfish and mahi-mahi Often more interesting from June to December
Comfortable diving conditions Often July and August, when trade winds may calm down
General spearfishing season April to December

There is no single perfect month for everyone. The best timing depends on your target species, your group level and whether you want a reef-focused, bluewater-focused or marlin-focused trip.

Marlin and World-Record-Class Fish

Cape Verde should not be sold as a shortcut to a Spearfishing World Record. That would be nonsense. But it is fair to say that Cape Verde is a world-record-class fishery, meaning that unusually large pelagic and reef fish are part of the reason serious spearfishers pay attention to these islands.

The right way to look at it is simple: you do not book Cape Verde because a record is guaranteed. You book Cape Verde because the fishery has the ingredients that make exceptional encounters possible.

For most divers, wahoo, tuna, mahi-mahi, reef species and strong bluewater action are already more than enough. For advanced spearfishers, a marlin-focused format can be discussed separately.

Safety and Requirements

Spearfishing in Cape Verde is mostly open-ocean diving.

  • The buddy system is mandatory.
  • Divers must follow guide and boat instructions.
  • Bag limits and local rules must be respected.
  • No ego diving and no depth chasing.
  • Only clean, selective shots should be taken.
  • Divers must be honest about their level before the trip.

For beginner and intermediate spearfishing groups, the trip can be built progressively. For advanced bluewater and marlin-focused trips, stronger diving experience and suitable equipment are required.

FAQ – Spearfishing Cape Verde

Is Cape Verde good for spearfishing?

Yes. Cape Verde is one of the strongest spearfishing destinations within reach of Europe, especially for divers interested in bluewater spearfishing, wahoo, tuna, marlin opportunities and strong reef species.

Do I need spearfishing experience?

Not always. You should be a capable freediver, but we can organise tailor-made beginner and intermediate spearfishing trips for groups. These trips usually start with reef and structure hunting before moving into more advanced bluewater scenarios when conditions and diver level allow it.

Can you spearfish tuna in Cape Verde?

Yes. Yellowfin tuna and bigeye tuna are possible in Cape Verde, especially in suitable offshore areas and bluewater conditions. Tuna encounters can never be guaranteed, but Cape Verde is a serious pelagic destination.

Can you spearfish marlin in Cape Verde?

Yes, but marlin spearfishing is a specialist objective. We can organise marlin-focused opportunities with an experienced local captain in the right season and weather window. This is for advanced bluewater spearfishers and is not part of a standard beginner or mixed-level trip.

What is included in the Kaluna Cape Verde setup?

The Kaluna setup includes guided spearfishing days, local boat and captain, simple apartment accommodation for the group, airport transfer, harbour transfers, fish handling and vacuum packing service, trip preparation and English/German communication.
